Photo of Kyla Galbreth with Super Sunday Hall of Fame logoKala Galbreath graduated from Bowling Green Technical College, now known as Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Office Systems Technology (OST).  She is currently employed at Tapp’s Medical Clinic in Bowling Green, KY.

“Attending Bowling Green Technical College was a life-changing experience. Choosing to attend a two-year college was the best decision I could have made.  My teachers were very supportive and cared about my education just as much as I did.  I loved the small classes and one-on-one time I got with my teachers.  The support and encouragement is what helped me succeed.”

Galbreath's OST degree prepared her for the workforce. It also helped her to earn a better income to provide for her family.

AARON MUDD amudd@bgdailynews.comCulinary student Sandy Combs making muffins

Years ago, Sandy Combs was a seventh-grade dropout wanting more out of life.

Now, the 50-year-old cake decorator has been named culinary arts student of the year by the Kentucky Restaurant Association. She also recently placed fourth in the world in a Dairy Queen cake decorating competition in Puerto Rico.

The experience was “a little unbelievable” for Combs, who is from Franklin and attends Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Combs credits the Simpson County Literacy Center for motivating her to get her GED diploma and pursue her dreams of a better life.

The Michigan native’s experience in the culinary arts industry goes back 28 years.

She described moving to Tennessee in 1996 and working as a pastry chef for the Gaylord Opryland Hotel as great experience. There she prepared wedding cakes and desserts for banquets. However, she also helped out when needed by flipping omelettes and by preparing salads and chicken Parmesan.

“I don’t know, I guess it kind of found me,” she said.

Combs continues to work through challenges and find success. Decorating cakes on live television with “cameras right in your face” was nerve-wracking for Combs, but she endured.

“It was really stressful, I think, kind of not knowing what to expect,” she said, adding that after a while everything else just blacks out. “It’s just you and that cake.”

While in Puerto Rico, Combs soaked in some sun, enjoyed beautiful beaches, visited historical sites and learned about the territory’s rain forest.

Cake decorating is a creative outlet and almost therapeutic for Combs, who is learning a lot through Southcentral Kentucky’s Culinary Arts program. The program is challenging, she said, but prepares you to be a professional.

Michael Riggs, program coordinator of the Culinary Arts program at SKYCTC, has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry.

“It’s a lot more about management than it is the ability to just cook well,” he said.

When it comes to her management skills, Riggs said Combs has become more comfortable and realized that she’s more capable than she thought.

That’ll help while Combs continues to chase her dreams.

“My dream has always been to have my own bakery,” she said. “And that is still a dream of mine.”

Paola Schwartz was born and raised in Mexico City, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from a private university. Soon after graduating, she married and moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky. Paola has three children, and it was the birth of her twin sons that sparked the change in her professional aspirations and desire to further her education. At the age of 2, both sons were diagnosed with Autism and Celiac Disease.

After the diagnosis of her sons, she began to research alternative medicine for children with Autism and Celiac Disease. That is when she learned about nutritional guidance and gluten free cooking. Thus began her journey as a culinary student. Even though cooking had never been of interest to Paola, she started cooking from scratch and discovered the world of culinary nutrition, changing the diet of her entire family. In 2011, when her children reached the age in which they could attend school full time, she decided to enroll in the Culinary Arts program at SKYCTC.

Paola rose to the challenge of being a wife, mother and student and graduated from SKYCTC in 2014 with her Associate Degree in Culinary Arts. Paola marks this achievement as a stepping stone in her journey to reach her ultimate goal, becoming certified as a personal chef through the American Culinary Federation.

“For me it is an honor today to be the one who represents the Hispanic community, because I believe we have so much to offer to this country that is now our home.  We are intelligent, hard-working people, with strong values and a heart filled with solidarity and a joy for life. I believe every person in the Hispanic community has the desire in his heart to have a positive impact in their communities and to make sure that they are making this a better place, for generations to come.”

Unusual situations, such as severe weather, may require Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) to delay its class schedule or close the institution. In the event severe weather poses a threat to the safety of SKYCTC students or employees, the College President (or his designee) will determine one of three types of schedules that all campuses will implement. The scheduling decision will be in effect for all locations equally (i.e. if the main campus is closed, both Glasgow locations will be closed), and all scheduling decisions will apply to students and employees alike (i.e. if students report at 10:00 a.m. faculty and staff report at 10:00).

The college has the following three types of schedule:

 1. Regular Schedule

All classes at all locations are operating as originally scheduled with no adjustment.

 2. Snow Schedule

Classes at all locations will begin at 10:00 a.m., beginning with classes that were originally scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. The snow schedule will be posted no later than 6:15 a.m. the day of the schedule change.

For example on the day of the schedule change
(1) a 9:30 a.m. Basic Public Speaking class would be canceled
(2) a 10:00 a.m. Catering class would meet as regularly scheduled

Employees should report to work by 10:00 a.m. Employees not reporting by 10:00 a.m. must take vacation time or make up work as mutually agreed with their supervisor. In the event that the snow schedule is in effect and the weather situation worsens, the college reserves the right to change the schedule to a “closed” status. If this change in schedule is deemed necessary, the decision will be posted prior to 8:30 a.m., otherwise.

Note
Due to an automated process, the snow schedule will be communicated as a “two hour delay” on WBKO’s television broadcast.

 3. Closed

All campuses are closed. Classes will not meet. Once this schedule change is made it will be in effect for all day and night classes and will not be reversed.

Announcements regarding delays or closings will be communicated using

BG Chamber of Commerce Launches On Track Motorsports Education Initiative

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – May 27, 2015 – Today, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce announced the launch of the On Track Motorsports Education Initiative, in partnership with the Warren County Area Technology Center, Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College and Holley Performance Products.

The Chamber, in partnership with the Bowling Green Economic Development Authority, will purchase two second-generation Chevrolet Camaros from Holley to donate to SKYCTC and Warren County ATC. The schools will completely rebuild the cars, using multiple educational disciplines, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

This initiative is a crucial piece of the Chamber’s commitment to the development of talent for the future workforce of South Central Kentucky. According to the 2013 Urgent Call to Action study, South Central Kentucky will have 4,500 job openings in 2016 in manufacturing alone, and that number doubles to 9,000 by 2020. The On Track initiative introduces critical STEM concepts in a practical setting that will help develop a highly skilled talent pipeline to continue to fuel the already strong South Central Kentucky economy.

“We are always excited when opportunities arise to create more educational access for individuals in the community and to highlight our achievements on a national level,” said Chris Cumens, vice president of finance and administration at SKYCTC. “The On Track initiative accomplishes both. We have a unique opportunity to help promote the growing demand for careers related to STEM fields while helping others understand the incredible automotive performance infrastructure that Bowling Green supports. It’s easy to envision this growing into a very impactful program for our community and becoming a national model much like ‘The Leader in Me.’”

“This is an outstanding opportunity for students in the automotive and manufacturing career pathways to be introduced to the real life application of academic standards in the STEM field,” said Eric Keeling, Warren County ATC principal. “This partnership has created unimaginable opportunities for our students. The initiative incorporates the tenants of a high quality education and sets the bar for STEM and CTE programs in Kentucky while challenging programs on the national level.”

Western Kentucky University will serve as a strategic partner in the On Track initiative, offering support from the Ogden College of Science and Engineering, Gordon Ford College of Business and Center for Gifted Studies.

“WKU is delighted to join with our local Chamber in this key strategic partnership to advance the STEM-related educational opportunities for our area students,” said Dave Tatman, associate vice president for advanced manufacturing at the WKU Center for Research and Development. “This is yet another terrific opportunity for our regional community to work together to meet the intellectual talent needs of our area businesses both now and in the future.”

The On Track initiative is set to be a revolutionary project, involving the entire community. Throughout the 2015-16 school year, Students will completely overhaul the cars, determining and utilizing the most efficient and cost-effective means. During this process, industry experts will work closely with students and faculty to aid in the development of the car as well as the curriculum. Additionally, students, parents and the public will be engaged through social media and physical appearances.

“Bowling Green is an epicenter for the motorsports industry,” said Mayor Bruce Wilkerson. “It’s only natural that our educational institutes utilize this asset for effective learning. I’m excited to see this partnership grow and impact students across the region.”

“Students from both Warren County ATC and SKYCTC will benefit greatly from the On Track education initiative,” said Mike Buchanon, Warren County Judge-Executive. “Our region boasts strongDescription: http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png ties to the motorsports and automotive industries, proving a natural fit for the two.”

For those businesses and individuals who wish to receive more information, or be involved in the On Track initiative, contact Kim Phelps at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce by calling 270-901-4611 or emailing kim@bgchamber.com.

  • Volunteers helped shop for more than 2,000 toys
  • SKYCTC, Camping World, and other community volunteers handled almost 1,000 telephone requests in Warren County alone. Susan Harmon, SKYCTC Professor, coordinated the telephone process.
  • 100’s of volunteers manned the North Pole in Warren, Barren and Simpson Counties to help sort and distribute 11,000 toys.
  • 5,500 children smiled on Christmas morning though all these generous contributions.

According to Doyle, “Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College has the highest number of volunteers who help with Toy For Tots and we could not do the work we do without the support of our President, Dr. Neal.”

Founded in 1947, by Major Bill Hendricks, Toys For Tots is a project of the United States Marine Corps with the mission to collect and distribute new toys to less fortunate children all across the United States.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP/WBKO)-- Students from Bellarmine University have won a video contest that draws attention to a network of rape crisis centers in Kentucky. Students at South Central Kentucky Community and Technical College placed 2nd with their video "You Are Not Alone".

Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs announced the winners Sunday of this year's #VoiceofHope competition.

“According to the U.S. Department of Justice, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college and more than 90 percent of victims do not report the assault,” General Beshear said. “The prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses is unacceptable. We have to do better. That is why I have made pursuing justice for victims of rape one of my office’s top priorities.”

“For more than 30 years, the Commonwealth has funded the statewide network of rape crisis centers so that no matter where or when sexual assault happens, help is available,” Eileen Recktenwald, director of KASAP. “This contest helps raise awareness about the hotline and lets victims know that help is there when they need it.”

The contest invited college students to submit a video that can be used on campuses to promote the rape crisis hotline, 800-656-HOPE.

Berea College finished third.

The contest awarded $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place and $500 for third place.

The contest is made possible from a grant KASAP received from the National Football League (NFL).

“We are grateful for the partnership of KASAP and the funding from NFL,” said Beshear. “I applaud the creative work and involvement of these students. These videos have the power to help more college students speak up and report sexual assault.”

at South Warren High School, talk Sunday, February 28, 2016, with
Denna White, director of admissions at SKYCTC, during a college
information fair at State Street Baptist Church.

When Victoria Blewett decided to go back to school to get her degree, she knew that she couldn't afford to go to a four-year college while taking care of her three children. So she decided to further her schooling at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College.

SKYCTC hosted its fifth annual Super Sunday events at Trinity Full Gospel Baptist Church and State Street Baptist Church as part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System's statewide effort to encourage early planning for college and the involvement of community mentors for young people.

Blewett is currently attending the college earning her degree in office assistance technology. After she finishes, she's considering transferring to Western Kentucky University to get a degree in business administration.

"It was a whole lot of programs at SKYCTC that helped me along the way like the Ready to Work Program for single parents and things like that. It's a whole lot of good benefits to attend SKYCTC," Blewett said.

Representatives from the school participated in the churches' worship services and afterward provided lunch for the church members while sharing information on affordable alternatives for college.

"We're providing opportunities for an education for folks all throughout our community here," SKYCTC President and CEO Dr. Phillip Neal said. "We want to make sure that we're being as accessible as we possibly can to everybody regardless of their background, their gender, their race. We want to make sure we're opening our doors to everyone."

Trinity pastor Stacey Beason said the event is a great way to connect the school to the community because church is a good place to reach people.

For "people that are interested in trying to talk to SKYCTC, (the event is) a great opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and with them providing the lunch, people don't have to rush home. They can just stay right here, eat and actually talk to some of the representatives," Beason said.

The events are a great outreach for the school to make people aware of what is being offered at the college, said Shawn Stovall, SKYCTC director of student success and Trinity church member. He said it's important to provide the community with information about the school.

"Our hope is to partner with Trinity and do workshops with them to help students get better prepared. They don't know how to fill out a (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or how to fill out an application, the school or just a job application. (Trinity) has this computer lab available to have some instruction in here to really help them out," Stovall said.

Nyra Cullom previously attended WKU before dropping out to take care of her sick mother. Later, she decided to continue her schooling at SKYCTC and now has graduated from the college with two associate degrees.

"They really helped you financially for me to go and those classes there, it really does help the students," she said. "Everybody's comfortable, the teachers are there to help and the class environment, it is a mixed environment because there is traditional and nontraditional (students), but nobody looks at that."

Cullom said the biggest difference between attending WKU and SKYCTC was the class sizes, which played a big role for her while completing her degrees.

"I say it might be maybe 15 people (in a class at SKYCTC), but what I did learn from Western, I was just a number because there was so many in a class," she said. "I really didn't get all the information that I needed at the time."

SKYCTC’s Janel Doyle learns what it’s like to become a Marine

Janel Doyle with Marine InstructorSouthcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) Professor Janel Doyle recently took part United States Marine Corps (USMC) Educator’s Workshop. The USMC Educator’s Workshop is an annual all-expense paid awareness program geared toward high school and community college educators and focuses on what it like to become a U.S. Marine.

Janel has worked with the U.S. Marine Corps for several years by serving as the Regional Director for the Toys for Tots campaign in South Central Kentucky.

Doyle, along with Mr. Joey Norman, Warren County High School Assistant Principal, and Rose Rementer, a local reporter from WNKY, first traveled to Louisville to the USMC Recruiting Depot for processing. There were 40 educators from all over Kentucky and Ohio who traveled to Parris Island, South Carolina.  Upon arrival the educators were treated just like incoming cadets.

According to Doyle, “We were immediately drilled off the bus by two vicious drill instructors. We stood on the yellow footprints, which was very emotional to me because I thought about the thousands of recruits that had stood on those very footprints before me”.

Doyle also said that they learned the difference in “yes/no, sir” and “Aye, Aye sir”.  “Yes/No, sir” are said only when the drill instructor asks a question.  “Aye, Aye” is said when the drill instructor gives a command.  The educators also spent some time in the sand pit because they did not listen well the to the drill instructors.

The educators also repelled down a 60-foot tower, participated in target practice, visited the barracks, and attended the Moto Run – where graduating recruits run down the streets of Parris Island with their platoons with their families there to cheer them on.The educators got to be a part of family day and had dinner with the graduating recruits and their families. Janel Doyle standing by Marine Tower

“In all honesty, this was the absolute best workshop/conference that I had ever attended.  We got to experience firsthand how recruits are transformed into Marines in only 13 weeks.   Recruits have to pass many tests before becoming a Marine. These tests include a test of knowledge (they are required to study and pass exams), swimming certification, physical and mental, riffle certification.    The discipline and drive the recruits have is not comparable to any other.   Work ethics and respect are top notch by the recruits and their superiors,” said Doyle.

“The Marines offer a reserve program for college students. This program requires them to go to boot camp (most attend during the summer) for 13 weeks, then they are required to report one weekend a month. They earn the title of Marine just like all others who are successful at Parris Island AND they get tuition assistance that does not have to be paid back for them to complete their college degrees”.

SKYCTC student from Logan urges legislators to fund community colleges fully

By: John Wright

John Wright lives and farms with his parents in the Adairville area. He is completing his Associate of Arts degree at SKYCTC while also studying agriculture at WKU. He has taken most of his SKYCTC classes at the nearby Franklin campus.

Dear Legislators of the Kentucky General Assembly,

My name is John Wright. I am a soon-to-be graduate of Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College, as well as a joint admissions student of Western Kentucky University.

As time progressed in my senior year of high school, I became more and more distressed with the aspect of attending a four-year university. I was worried about how I would pay for my education as well as for living on campus. I had decided on WKU; however, the price tag of about $20,000 a year was more than I could afford.

However, in the spring semester of my senior year I enrolled in a dual credit math course at SKYCTC. Little did I know that this would shape my future. I instantaneously fell in love with the small class size, family atmosphere, and the reasonable price.

I began to research more into attending SKYCTC as an alternative to attending WKU. So in the fall semester of 2014 as a full-time freshman in college, I began my journey into an unknown territory. I was anxious about how college would be; however, there was no reason for my anxiety because soon after classes had begun the nature of SKYCTC alleviated those worries.

The professors were more helpful than I could imagine, and the small class sizes meant that I had personal interaction and built a relationship with my instructors. I felt so relaxed and comfortable attending classes.

I have heard many reports on how the state of Kentucky is considering a budget that would cut state funding for SKYCTC by 9 percent, and that is a tragedy. This college, like so many other community colleges around the state, provides an essential building block to a better life for so many individuals.

Since SKYCTC has such a lower cost of tuition, it puts a degree or certificate in the hands of students that without the college would otherwise not obtain a degree. SKYCTC for many is a stepping stone from high school onto a four-year university, as is the case with me. Without a doubt if I had not attended SKYCTC, I would be saddled with student loans that would cause financial and academic stress, as would all the other graduates of the college.

To many of the students here, this school is more than just classes and halls. It is a brighter future, a better tomorrow, and not just for ourselves. This better tomorrow is for our families, our future children, and for Kentucky. Community colleges across the state produce our medical professionals, our tradesmen, and our leaders. If you take away funding from SKYCTC, ultimately we all will pay the price.

I understand that sometimes finances are tight and that cuts have to be made. I don’t dispute the fact that Kentucky has to be fiscally responsible because we do. However, part of being fiscally responsible is cutting the right amount in the right places. If you have to reduce funding, then we must fight to minimize the effect on students. We need to try to reduce budgets across the board wrather than load our educational institutions with the full burden.

I strongly hold the belief that to drastically cut funding for not just SKYCTC, but all community colleges, is not only irresponsible, but detrimental to the future of Kentucky.
